Vic Mensa Launches Podcast with Chance the Rapper

Vic Mensa debuts his podcast featuring Chance the Rapper, discussing their friendship and the origins of the Save Money collective.

Vic Mensa officially launched his new show, the Vic Mensa Show, with Chance the Rapper as his very first guest. The podcast, which stems from his popular Instagram series, is set to air 24 episodes, releasing new segments every Wednesday.

During their conversation, the two artists looked back on their shared past, recalling their first encounter at a 14-year-old open mic event at Jones, a selective enrollment public school in Chicago. Mensa had arrived from another school after spotting Chance in the lunchroom, although he admitted he lacked the microphone skills to make an impression at the time.

Their friendship blossomed from that day, leading to the formation of the Save Money collective. Mensa shared memorable experiences, including an early studio session for a song titled “Lord Release,” funded by his father.

Their bond faced challenges early on when Chance was reportedly threatened by older students at school. Mensa took action, arriving at the school with a group of about 25 friends, resulting in a physical altercation. “Some n***as was in goddamn suits and shit… found them, beat they ass, for fucking with Chance,” Mensa had previously mentioned in an interview on All the Smoke. Their loyalty fostered a longstanding friendship that has remained strong over the years.

This bond inspired Chance’s 2013 mixtape, Acid Rap, particularly on the track “Acid Rain,” where he reflected on their relationship. The lyrics convey the jealousy they felt towards each other’s success but also an unwavering commitment to one another. “If you touch my brother, all that anti-violence shit goes out the window,” read one notable line that emphasizes their loyalty.

Mensa’s podcast aims to expand upon the conversations he has begun through his award-winning Orange Tree video series, aiming to foster a platform for meaningful discussions encompassing humor, vulnerability, and radical ideas.

Produced in collaboration with Mass Appeal, through Mensa’s company ORANJ, the Vic Mensa Show is already generating buzz in the music community. Listeners can expect Episode 2 to be released next Wednesday, with anticipation building on how the series will evolve.

In addition to this podcast, Mensa recently addressed ongoing public disputes with fellow artists, including his recent back-and-forth with Cam’ron. He expressed a desire for a more open dialogue about their differences.

The world of podcasts appears to be expanding rapidly, and Mensa’s initiative adds another voice to this growing platform. Notably, he isn’t the only artist venturing into this territory; several are beginning to explore podcasting as a means to connect with fans on deeper levels.

As the entertainment landscape continues to change, the Vic Mensa Show will be one to watch as it delves into the unique perspectives and stories of its guests.
