Interpol’s Operation Jackal IV leads to 58 arrests linked to West African cybercrime, focusing on scams and financial fraud across multiple countries.
In a significant law enforcement operation, fifty-eight individuals connected to organized West African cyber-crime networks have been apprehended across 22 countries and six continents. Dubbed “Operation Jackal IV,” this initiative, coordinated by Interpol, specifically targets those involved in romance and investment scams, and has also identified 263 additional suspects.
The operation ran from November 2025 to June 2026, examining how these criminal groups launder money and execute various forms of financial fraud, including cryptocurrency and email compromise fraud. Interpol noted that these scams often targeted retirees in English-speaking countries.
Tomonobu Kaya, the director of Interpol’s financial crime center, stated, “By following illicit financial flows across borders, we are attacking the very lifeblood of organized crime and making it increasingly difficult for criminal networks to profit from their activities.” He emphasized the power of international cooperation demonstrated through Operation Jackal IV.
Interpol’s efforts included providing cross-border coordination and intelligence sharing, along with specialized training for participating nations focused on money-laundering investigations.
While many aspects of Operation Jackal IV remain under investigation, preliminary outcomes have already identified significant arrests in countries including Argentina, Italy, Romania, and South Africa. In South Africa alone, local authorities executed raids on seven locations linked to a syndicate engaged in romance and investment scams. During these operations, South African police arrested 39 individuals, seized $2.67 million (approximately £1.96 million), and blocked 257 bank accounts.
In addition to financial crimes, the West African criminal networks involved in these operations are also associated with other serious and violent crimes. Operation Jackal IV is part of a series of ongoing “Jackal” operations initiated since 2022. The previous operation, Jackal III, led to the arrest of 300 individuals linked to the notorious Black Axe and related groups in 2024.
Black Axe has gained notoriety as a shadowy criminal organization with international operations in trafficking, prostitution, and even murder. Nigeria has been identified as a primary recruitment source, where many members are often university-educated individuals brought into the criminal fold during their studies.
The actions taken during Operation Jackal IV mark a considerably increased effort to dismantle these international crime networks, fueling hope for stronger collaboration among countries in the fight against cybercrime.
