King Harald V of Norway faces deteriorating health while receiving treatment for a bloodstream infection, with Crown Prince Haakon stepping in during his recovery.
King Harald V of Norway’s health has worsened, prompting an update from the palace regarding his hospitalization. Currently receiving antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his bloodstream, the 89-year-old monarch has shown a response to treatment, despite the recent deterioration in his condition.
King Harald, who has reigned since 1991, was admitted to Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, a week ago. While he is on leave from royal duties indefinitely, Crown Prince Haakon has taken over as regent in his father’s absence.
The king has been undergoing treatment in recent weeks for haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood condition that reduces the number of red blood cells, causing fatigue and shortness of breath. The palace noted that the king’s condition continues to be closely monitored, and he remains under care.
Interestingly, in April 2024, the Norwegian royal household announced that King Harald would significantly cut back on public engagements due to his age. Earlier this year, he underwent the installation of a pacemaker after experiencing health issues while on holiday in Malaysia.
This year has also been challenging for the Norwegian royal family. Crown Prince Haakon’s wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, underwent a lung transplant in June after being diagnosed with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. This event closely followed the sentencing of Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, to four years in prison for two counts of rape. Høiby had denied the more severe charges, and his legal team announced plans to appeal the conviction.
Furthermore, documents released earlier in the year revealed Mette-Marit’s ongoing relationship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, leading her to express regret over their connection in a national television interview. She has apologized to King Harald and Queen Sonja, admitting to poor judgment and wishing she had never met him.
Currently, King Harald’s recovery is a matter of public concern, with many hoping for his swift return to health, as Crown Prince Haakon takes on his royal responsibilities in the interim.
