A cyber attack recently shut down a small power plant in the UK, but officials affirmed there was no risk to the wider energy system.

A small power plant in the UK was shut down during a cyber attack. The government stated that at no point was there a risk to the UK’s energy system. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has reached out to power companies to make them aware of the danger posed by cyber attacks.

The Telegraph reported that the attack, which took place last month, was carried out by hackers associated with the Iranian regime. For security reasons, neither the government nor the National Cyber Security Centre, which manages attacks on critical infrastructure, could disclose further information regarding the site that was affected. However, it was clarified that this incident did not involve an essential service like a large power station.

According to the Telegraph, the power plant was out of operation for four days. DESNZ confirmed the incident affected a small-scale generator and emphasized that there was never a risk to the broader energy network. In fact, the UK’s power infrastructure includes several smaller gas generators that provide temporary power as needed.

Maintaining the security of energy supplies is a vital challenge for the government. Steps are being undertaken to update regulations concerning cyber security, with a new energy resilience strategy scheduled to be released later this year.

Iran has long been recognized as a potential cyber power. In light of the ongoing conflict with the US this year, there have been few incidents so far, yet the Western cyber-security community remains vigilant against potential attacks from state-linked hackers.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned the US would sever all economic connections with Iran, indicating any nation that partners with Iran financially would similarly face isolation. The statement follows the expiration of a 60-day ceasefire on Monday, with no visible resolution in sight for the ongoing conflict.

The immigration status of Maryam Tahmasebi was also revoked due to her marriage to the son of a prominent Iranian figure.
