Russia pulls ambassador from the UK as diplomatic relations worsen over Britain’s support for Ukraine amid escalating tensions.
Russia has pulled its ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, following seven years in his diplomatic role. This withdrawal signals a deepening crisis in relations between the two nations, particularly as the Kremlin seeks to exert pressure over Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine.
The Russian embassy in London announced that Kelin departed last month, a period marked by increasing tensions. The embassy warned the UK of potential “consequences” just last week after British involvement was reported concerning the supply of attack drones to Kyiv.
Currently, the Russian embassy’s list of “senior diplomatic staff” in the UK features only Vasily A Tsyganov, the chargé d’affaires. John Foreman, a former British defense attaché, noted that gaps between ambassadors can occur but expressed concern over Moscow’s willingness to downgrade relations by not appointing a successor.

The embassy stated that Kelin’s diplomatic mission was formally concluded on July 21. A spokesperson emphasized that the state of Russia-UK relations has deteriorated significantly due to actions taken by the British government.
While Kelin had previously aimed to maintain some communication avenues, the spokesperson criticized the UK’s confrontational approach, suggesting that a more respectful dialogue could be beneficial if the UK’s policies shift.
Furthermore, Moscow’s statements suggest a willingness to preserve diplomatic ties, with the Russian embassy outright denying suggestions of a downgrade in relations. A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign Office reaffirmed that maintaining communication remains important, highlighting that the UK continues to stand firm with Ukraine and support its defense against what is termed an illegal invasion by Russia.
Former soldier Shaun Pinner, who had previously fought alongside Ukrainian forces, expressed concern regarding Kelin’s departure, labeling it a “dangerous erosion” of communications. However, he pointed out that meaningful exchange had already been lacking for some time.
Kelin has been known to convey Kremlin viewpoints during media interviews, including a recent one in June where he stated that Russia’s position in the war is one it cannot afford to lose. His long career in diplomacy began in the Soviet service in 1979.
In light of recent reports indicating the use of British-manufactured drones in attacks within Russia, the Russian embassy escalated its rhetoric. Their statements conveyed a clear message: the actions taken by London would bear consequences for which the UK would be accountable.
