Dima Beseda shares his journey from being a gaming enthusiast to becoming a millionaire by 27, despite his parents’ concerns about his passion.
Dima Beseda’s life was transformed when his father introduced a computer into their home at the age of three. Immersed in video games, he discovered a world filled with rules and challenges, which quickly became his passion. By the time he reached 13, World of Warcraft launched, captivating him with its expansive landscape and opportunities for achievement.
While Dima thrived in the gaming realm, earning respect from peers for his skills, his parents were filled with concern. Despite maintaining good grades at school, his preoccupation with gaming began to escalate. His parents attempted to curb his screen time, but as he began university, he found himself skipping classes to play endlessly.
Dropping out of university came as no surprise. Dima’s father was frustrated and warned him about the consequences of his decisions. Despite these pressures, Dima was resolute in his dedication to gaming, which left his parents feeling defeated. At 17, Dima could not comprehend their worries, but as he reflects at 35, he acknowledges their apprehensions.
His journey took a turn when a professional hockey player from Russia, where Dima was raised, reached out for help in boosting his gaming rank. Working two nights on this task, he earned what he usually made in a month at McDonald’s, a job he had taken to support himself.
Following that initial success, he further capitalized on his skill by selling in-game items for real money, netting about $2,500 a month—significant income in Russia. Dima credits gaming for not only introducing him to his wife but also for allowing him to provide a comfortable life for his growing family, leading his father to ease his concerns.
Over time, he expanded his endeavors into gaming businesses, founding Overgear and LF Group, and realizing that his passion for gaming was an avenue for significant wealth. While money was never his primary focus, by the age of 27, he found himself a millionaire.
Dima candidly shares his thoughts on the nature of wealth, stating, “Before you earn enough to feel stable, you think money is success. But it turns out, money doesn’t equal happiness.” His relationship with his family has kept him grounded, and he acknowledges the importance of balancing ambition with personal connections.
In recent conversations with his therapist, Dima pondered whether his early gaming habits indicated an addiction. He dismissed the notion, affirming his commitment to school and self-care throughout his gaming journey.
Reflecting on his parents’ fears, Dima understands their perspectives better now. They failed to see how gaming could lead to success, wanting him to engage more with the world outside. He encourages current parents to support their children’s interests, suggesting that such pursuits could lead to unexpectedly favorable outcomes.
