Brazilian police recover eight stolen Matisse artworks valued at $200,000, arresting a suspect linked to the theft from a local library.
Eight illustrations by French artist Henri Matisse, stolen from a library in São Paulo, Brazil, have been recovered by local police. The artworks, valued at approximately $200,000 (£148,000), were located at a residence in São Bernardo do Campo, a suburb south of São Paulo. Authorities arrested a 44-year-old suspect at the scene.
The theft occurred at the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade on December 7 of last year. During the incident, two thieves overpowered a security guard and an elderly couple visiting the library, making off with the artworks through the main entrance on foot.
Prior to this recovery, police had arrested three individuals in connection with the case. The man apprehended on Thursday, João Paulo Linhares de Araujo, is believed to have stored the stolen Matisse pieces on behalf of those involved in the theft. He also faces charges related to the illegal possession of a firearm.
Laéssio Rodrigues de Oliveira, a 53-year-old known for his art theft, is suspected to have orchestrated the library heist. He has been in custody since April after being arrested in connection with another criminal case.
Two additional individuals, a man and a woman, have also been taken into custody regarding the robbery.
The Matisse illustrations were originally created for a limited-edition art book called Jazz. They were part of a joint exhibition at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, which included five engravings by the Brazilian artist Candido Portinari, who also has works that remain missing. These engravings were part of a special edition of the novel Menino de engenho (Plantation Boy) by Brazilian author José Lins do Rego.
The theft targeted the exhibition, From Book to Museum, on its final day. Reports indicate the thieves entered the library mid-morning and escaped to a nearby metro station after the heist, placing the stolen artworks in a canvas bag to facilitate their getaway.
Following the recovery, the local cultural department confirmed that the Matisse artworks have been returned to the library, which has since enhanced its security measures. Art critics regard Matisse as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, stating that the value of the stolen works is incalculable. Portinari, known for his depictions of rural laborers, is celebrated as a leading figure in Brazilian Modernism.
