Arsenal is set to face Manchester City in the Community Shield this Sunday in Cardiff, marking the first match for Enzo Maresca as the City manager, replacing Pep Guardiola. Maresca aims to narrow the gap after City ended the previous Premier League season seven points behind the champions, Arsenal.

This matchup promises to be a thrilling precursor to a potentially intense rivalry between the two managers, with Arsenal having a strong record against City in the Community Shield, winning all three encounters historically.

With the Premier League season commencing shortly after, Arsenal will kick off their campaign against Coventry, while City takes on Bournemouth two days later. On the eve of the Community Shield, reports suggest that Arsenal is favored to retain their title, with a predicted four-point lead over City.

Maresca declared his intentions, stating, “For me personally, it’s a trophy. When trophies are there in a final you are there to win the game, no friendly game at all. We want to try our best to win the first trophy.” He acknowledged Arsenal’s status, calling them a “fantastic team” under Mikel Arteta, who guided them to their last Premier League victory.

Considering the squad for the upcoming match, Maresca addressed concerns over Erling Haaland’s fitness. “He is ok. He had a small thing behind the heel. But he’s ok. Everyone is fit, but we know some of them have just arrived two days ago from their summer break,” he added.

On the other side, Arteta expressed confidence in his players and praised Maresca’s capabilities, suggesting that he might be as formidable as Guardiola. “Now it’s Enzo – who is as good as [Guardiola], because I know him well. He will provide something different to the club,” said Arteta.

Arteta confirmed that aside from injured players Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, the squad is in excellent shape, with key players like Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice available. “It’s a trophy, one that we can have because we earned it last year from winning the Premier League,” he mentioned, emphasizing his squad’s eagerness to aim high this season.

As expectations build ahead of this high-stakes encounter, both teams are keen to solidify their ambitions early in the season with this matchup carrying considerable weight in terms of momentum and confidence.
