Matthias Jaissle warns Newcastle fans that success will take time as the club transitions after several high-profile player departures.
Matthias Jaissle has cautioned Newcastle fans that the pathway to success won’t be immediate following a tumultuous summer transfer window. He expressed his ambition after taking over from Eddie Howe, while acknowledging the significant transition facing the club due to the departure of several key players and a shift toward recruiting elite young talent.
During his official unveiling at St James’ Park, Jaissle addressed the media for the first time and recognized the formidable challenge ahead after this summer’s departures, including captain Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon.
The transfer strategy has also seen a noticeable shift, with the club opting to sign three outfield players under the age of 22: Bazoumana Touré, Sean Steur, and Aladji Bamba. Despite the loss of experience, the 38-year-old coach remains optimistic about the club’s future. He stated, “We are ambitious. That’s the most important thing, also why I decided to come here. But this will not happen overnight.”

The exits have left a palpable void in the dressing room, placing added pressure on the current squad to elevate their performances. Jaissle acknowledged the impact of losing such integral figures but emphasized the importance of moving forward rather than dwelling on past losses.
He explained, “The players who left the club were great players, great characters, experienced players and this is now a vacuum. Other players need to step in. It’s a big challenge during any transition period, but it’s no time for complaints. We want to see the opportunity in that situation and that’s our approach from day one.” The German coach has yet to appoint a new permanent captain.
In addition to considering potential new signings like Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Jaissle is dedicated to enhancing the skills of the players currently within the squad. This includes striker Nick Woltemade, who joined Newcastle 12 months ago for a club-record fee of £69 million. Although Woltemade scored five goals in his first eight matches, he encountered difficulties maintaining his form. Jaissle commented on the striker’s situation, saying, “I saw that he had a difficult period. From the first day, we talked a lot; he should leave the past behind. It’s something he cannot change. We are just looking forward. We find solutions, we do our best. Not only with Nick, with all the other players as well.”
Jaissle is eager to build momentum following a 2-1 friendly win against Valencia during the team’s recent training camp in Spain. The club has a quick turnaround, heading to Edinburgh to take on Everton in a pre-season fixture on Wednesday. These final preparations will provide Jaissle with the opportunity to evaluate the squad before the new Premier League season commences.
