Ronald Araujo expresses excitement after joining Liverpool, citing inspiration from Virgil van Dijk and aims to make an impact at Anfield.
Ronald Araujo has expressed his immense motivation to make an impact at Liverpool following his finalization of a move to Anfield from Barcelona. The 27-year-old arrives with an impressive track record, having secured three La Liga titles during his time at Barcelona, where he also recently served as club captain.
In his first comments as a Liverpool player, Araujo highlighted Virgil van Dijk as a crucial source of inspiration, identifying the veteran center-back as an ideal mentor for this upcoming transition to the Premier League. He mentioned, “We all know what a great player Virgil is. He’s a real reference point for the team and he’s a kind of role model and reference for me personally as well. I’m looking forward to lining up alongside him hopefully and spending time with him both on the field and off it as well.”
Araujo noted that the opportunity to form a defensive partnership with Van Dijk is one of the exciting prospects of his arrival. Speaking to the club’s official website, he praised Van Dijk’s qualities and expressed eagerness to learn from him. “With hard work, I think we can achieve good things together as a partnership and as a defense,” Araujo added.

The switch to Merseyside unfolded rapidly for Araujo. He shared, “It happened really, really quickly, to be honest with you. It’s a huge thanks to Liverpool for making that process so quick and for getting in touch and for their interest. I had a conversation with the sporting director and also the coach. I had no doubts for a second about coming here. It’s a great club, a great institution, and it’s a great opportunity for me to enjoy my football here.”
Praising the competitive nature of the English Premier League, he remarked on how his physical attributes—speed, aerial ability, and strength—are suited for the demanding style of English football. “I think my attributes will suit this league down to the ground. It’s very, very competitive and some say – and why not? – it’s the best league in the world,” he said. He articulated a clear desire to make his mark at Liverpool and relished the chance to play in front of their passionate fanbase.
Araujo follows in the footsteps of illustrious Uruguayans who have represented Liverpool, such as Luis Suarez. He disclosed that he received a message of encouragement from Suarez, who continues to be a revered figure at Anfield. “Of course as a kid I used to watch Luis playing all those fantastic games for Liverpool. Just a few minutes ago I got a good luck message from him saying all the best, you’ve joined a great club and all the very best for your time here,” Araujo concluded. The defender’s ambition to win trophies with Liverpool appears clear as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.
