LA Galaxy’s GM discusses Casemiro’s pledge before transfer to Inter Miami as MLS opens a tampering investigation into the deal.
Major League Soccer is currently embroiled in a controversy surrounding Casemiro’s transfer to Inter Miami. LA Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz has claimed that the Brazilian midfielder expressed loyalty to the Galaxy before ultimately joining the team managed by David Beckham.
The league has officially initiated an investigation to determine if tampering or any rule violations occurred during the transfer process. This development comes just months after Casemiro had reportedly communicated his desire to play for the Galaxy.
Speaking after a goalless draw against Dallas, Kuntz conveyed crucial insights about Casemiro’s intentions. He detailed a situation where the former Manchester United player stated his preference for the West Coast club prior to signing with Inter Miami.
“It is true that Casemiro called and said that he always wanted to play for Inter Miami,” Kuntz stated during a post-match press conference. “It’s also true that this came two months after he told us that he only wanted to play for the Galaxy.”
The crux of the debate centers around the MLS’s “discovery rights” system. This framework grants specific clubs the right of first refusal for international players. Each MLS team can include up to five players on their discovery list, which can be adjusted as needed. It has been reported that the Galaxy held these rights for Casemiro, but Inter Miami announced they acquired them as part of the signing process.
Despite the ongoing inquiry, there seems to be a temporary arrangement between the two clubs. In a released statement, the Galaxy confirmed, “The LA Galaxy and Inter Miami CF have reached a settlement for the discovery priority to sign Casemiro, and the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation currently open with Major League Soccer.”
Casemiro himself has not shied away from the swirling controversy. He has previously addressed the situation by highlighting his personal connection to Miami and his professional admiration for his new teammates. He mentioned that the comfort of his family played a vital role in his decision-making process.
“In the end, [Miami] is a city I love. My wife, my kids, and I are always here when we have days off. We know the city,” he explained about accepting his move to Inter Miami.
He further added, “When I spoke to [the Galaxy], I made it very clear which team I wanted to join in the MLS and that is Inter Miami because of the project, the hope and of course to play with the best player of all time.”
While the off-field issues continue to generate attention, Casemiro’s on-field performance has begun with some hurdles. His home debut at Chase Stadium was marked by a significant mistake that surprised fans and teammates alike.
During a 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew, the veteran midfielder unintentionally gifted possession to the opposition and turned the ball into his own net. This disconcerting play visibly frustrated his teammates, including superstar Lionel Messi, who was seen on the sidelines reacting to Casemiro’s struggle to adapt to the game’s pace.
