Trump Media unveils Truth API, offering traders quicker access to posts from Truth Social, raising questions among supporters.
Trump Media & Technology Group recently launched its new service, Truth API, designed to provide faster access to posts from the president’s Truth Social accounts. This move has already drawn mixed reactions, even from some of Trump’s supporters.
Available for a fee, the Truth API offers a machine-readable feed of posts from the “highest-ranking Truth Social accounts.” Although the announcement did not specifically name Trump, it is widely recognized that he has the largest following on the platform, where he frequently shares market-sensitive information on topics such as tariffs and international relations.
Upon its launch on Saturday, the service promises that users will receive updates almost instantly—within milliseconds. According to the interim CEO of Trump Media, Kevin McGurn, “Markets already move on Truth Social posts,” highlighting the potential value of the service for traders.
By employing an application programming interface (API), firms that subscribe can directly integrate their trading systems with the real-time data stream from Truth Social. This level of immediacy can be crucial for firms that conduct automated trading, as even the slightest time advantage can influence market movements.
The launch came on a day when Trump hinted at nearing a deal to resolve the conflict with Iran, which led to a notable decrease in crude oil prices by Monday. This underlines how Trump’s social media communications can create immediate economic impacts.
Despite the streamlined access, it is important to note that not all of Trump’s posts will be beneficial for traders. His recent updates have included announcements such as winning a golf championship, which may not influence the markets.
Truth Media has not specified which accounts will be included in the Truth API, though Trump’s account boasts around 13 million followers. Other notable accounts on the platform include those associated with the White House and prominent figures like Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Criticism surrounding the Truth API has also emerged. Some Trump supporters argue that such offerings might diminish his political accomplishments. Shaun Maguire, a partner at Sequoia Capital and noted Trump advocate, voiced his discontent on social media, suggesting that the focus on trading may distract from Trump’s policy wins.
Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff, have raised concerns as well. They recently wrote to the SEC chair, expressing that the service could be perceived as an “outrageous abuse of the President’s office.”
While Trump Media has not disclosed the pricing details for the API, reports suggest potential monthly fees could range from $60,000 to $100,000 for the most dedicated users, especially those within high-frequency trading firms and banks that depend on rapid market changes. The company has indicated that it is onboarding initial customers as part of this offering.
As the Truth API begins to take shape in the trading landscape, it remains to be seen how it will impact both market moves and public perception of the intersection of media and trading.
