Berkshire Hathaway’s shares surged to an eight-month high as market competitors show gains. Key stocks in its portfolio also perform strongly.
Berkshire Hathaway shares climbed to an eight-month high, closing at $511.54 on Friday. This marked a 5.2% decrease from the company’s all-time closing high of $539.80, reached on May 2 of the previous year, just before Warren Buffett announced his plans to step down as CEO at the end of 2025.
At Friday’s close, Berkshire’s stock price was $766,600, which is 5.3% lower than the record of $809,350. Despite this, the conglomerate has significantly reduced its deficit, recovering more than half of a 17.5 percentage point gap from just two months ago.
Competitive performance in two main sectors, railroads being a notable one, has affected Berkshire’s stock trajectory. However, positive developments in three of its substantial equity portfolio holdings provide a brighter outlook.
Leading the charge is Apple, now valued at over $70 billion, which has experienced a 13.6% gain this year. Coca-Cola, Berkshire’s third-largest holding worth $35 billion, saw a remarkable 25% jump year-to-date. This positive trend was buoyed by earnings exceeding expectations, which led Coke to raise its full-year outlook.
Additionally, Bank of America, ranked number four in Berkshire’s portfolio, is up 12.6% for the year, translating to a near $32 billion valuation. Investors are looking forward to the release of the company’s second-quarter results, set for Saturday, August 8.
Berkshire’s market capitalization currently stands at approximately $1.1 trillion, while its cash reserves reached $397.4 billion as of March 31, reflecting a 6.5% increase from December 31. Excluding rail cash and subtracting T-bills payable, this figure is effectively $380.2 billion, showing a 3% rise from the end of last year.
As the market continues to fluctuate, all eyes remain on Berkshire Hathaway’s upcoming performance, with stakeholders eager to see if the upward trends in key holdings will propel further gains.
