Ali Sánchez hits his first career home run for the Yankees, leading to a 9-5 victory over the White Sox while reflecting on his Venezuelan roots.

Yankees catcher Ali Sánchez was celebrated by his teammates after hitting his first major-league home run during a crucial game against the Chicago White Sox. The event took place at Rate Field, contributing significantly to the Yankees’ 9-5 victory.

Sánchez’s cap stood out among his teammates’, featuring the letters “VZ” prominently stitched on the side. He requested these letters in honor of Venezuela, where catastrophic earthquakes claimed over 5,000 lives on June 24, as noted by the Associated Press. The devastation weighed heavily on his mind as he rounded the bases after his three-run shot in the eighth inning.

During the jog, Sánchez reflected, stating, “My hometown. Literally, a kid running the bases from Venezuela and living the dream.” He comes from Carora, a city of about 200,000 located west of Caracas. Although his hometown was not directly impacted by the quakes, many people he knows were affected.

On paternity leave at the time of the earthquakes, Sánchez shared the news of his third child’s birth with family at home. His first home run not only marked a personal milestone, but it also helped the Yankees expand their lead from 6-4, highlighting its importance in the game.

The home run traveled 371 feet, clearing the left-field wall off reliever Sean Newcomb’s fastball. Upon returning to the dugout, Sánchez was met with enthusiastic cheers from his teammates, a moment he described as incredibly fulfilling. “You always dream to play in the big leagues, and having your first home run with a Yankees uniform and getting the W is the best,” he said.

Despite the triumph, Sánchez’s position on the team may be uncertain as the trade deadline approaches. The Yankees are reportedly considering upgrades at the catcher position. So far this season, their catchers have struggled, posting a 56 wRC+, ranking among the worst in the league.

Austin Wells, currently in the lineup, has been disappointing with a .165 batting average in 206 at-bats. Sánchez, who has been in the majors since June, has shown better numbers against left-handed pitchers but his overall performance has been inconsistent. The Yankees may target a right-handed-hitting catcher to fill the gap left by Sánchez, who has risen from the third-string catcher to a prominent player in recent games.

Max Fried, the starting pitcher for the Yankees, expressed admiration for Sánchez, noting his hard work on defense and quality hitting. Fried remarked, “Since Ali’s been here, he’s contributed. It’s a long time coming. I’m really glad he was able to celebrate that. He deserves it.”

Manager Aaron Boone also expressed happiness for Sánchez, stating, “Really cool to see Ali really get into one for his first career homer. That’s pretty exciting.” After the game, Sánchez was recognized with the Player of the Game championship belt and took time to engage with the fan who caught his home run ball, posing for pictures and signing memorabilia.

When asked where he intends to keep the historic ball, Sánchez replied, “Home. Probably with my family.” He emphasized that even though he’s now in the U.S., his heart remains in Venezuela, saying, “Yes. I would keep it there.”
