Mark van Bommel Named New Belgium Head Coach

Belgium has officially appointed Mark van Bommel as the new head coach of its national football team, marking a significant change in leadership. The announcement confirms that the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona midfielder will take charge on August 15. His primary mission will be to lead Belgium through the 2028 European Championship.

Van Bommel steps in to replace Rudi Garcia, who departed after an 18-month tenure that saw his contract end following the recent World Cup cycle. Belgium faced a disappointing exit in the quarter-finals, losing to eventual winners Spain, capping off an unbeaten streak of 18 matches that began after a 3-1 defeat to Ukraine in March 2025.

“It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium,” Van Bommel expressed in his announcement. He thanked the Royal Belgian Football Association for placing their trust in him and acknowledged the talent within the squad. “Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best,” he added.

Joining Van Bommel on the coaching staff will be Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens, and Reinier Robbemond, who will assist in the team’s preparations and strategy moving forward.

The new head coach has been without a position since leaving Belgian club Royal Antwerp, where he concluded the 2023-24 season. Van Bommel led Antwerp to its first league title in 66 years in his debut campaign but faced challenges the following season, resulting in his departure after a third-place finish in the regular season.

Throughout his playing career, Van Bommel earned 79 caps for the Netherlands and was part of the team that reached the World Cup final in 2010. His coaching journey began with the Netherlands’ under-17s before he took on roles as assistant manager for Saudi Arabia and Australia, as well as managing PSV’s youth team.

Despite a promising start in management, Van Bommel faced setbacks, including a brief and unsuccessful stint as Wolfsburg’s manager in 2021, which ended after an eight-match winless run.

Currently ranked eighth in FIFA’s world rankings, Van Bommel takes over a Belgian side that has struggled in recent European Championships, failing to progress beyond the quarter-finals since the tournament’s expansion in 1996. The team’s recent history includes exits in both the round of 16 and the quarter-finals in the last two tournaments.

Now, the challenge for Van Bommel is clear: revive Belgium’s international ambitions and navigate the road to the next European Championship in 2028, aiming to transform potential into tangible success.
