Johnny Depp Surprises Fans as Scrooge at Comic-Con

Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, fully transformed into Ebenezer Scrooge. The actor donned an iconic black coat and top hat, embodying the curmudgeonly character as he interacted with fans.

The event began with Christmas carolers performing a medley, creating a festive atmosphere amidst the warm, 80-degree afternoon. As the crowd gathered, Depp emerged in character, croaking, “Have you no jobs? It seems as though you have so much spare time. I work.” His response garnered laughter from the assembled fans.

One audience member greeted him with, “Good day to you, Mr. Scrooge,” to which Depp curtly replied, “What’s so pleasant about it?” The interaction showcased his commitment to the character, as he kept in character while engaging with attendees.

While the appearance was meant to be a surprise, several fans, cosplaying as Depp’s more renowned characters like Captain Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter, spotted him prior to the reveal. Depp took the opportunity to playfully rib these fans, adding to the jovial spirit of the event for nearly half an hour.

The upcoming film titled “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” co-starring Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, and Daisy Ridley, among others, is set to hit theaters on November 13. Depp expressed his excitement about the role, stating, “It really has been an extraordinary privilege,” and adding that the story of Scrooge is one he has “been obsessed with since I was a little child.”

Later in the day, Depp moved to Hall H, where he joined West to debut the film’s trailer. As the lights dimmed, he emerged once again as Scrooge, guiding the audience with the light from a candle. “Have you all no lives?” he asked, maintaining his character’s disgruntled demeanor as he gazed out at the audience.

In a whimsical finish, Depp tossed handfuls of candy onto the stage, ordering the eager crowd to “have at it” before he exited amid humorous interactions. Depp’s enchanting performance at Comic-Con was not just a celebration of his new role but a reminder of his enduring connection with fans, even amid past controversies.
