John Cena discusses his daily stretching routine, emphasizing its role in maintaining flexibility and longevity while humorously addressing aging.
John Cena has an amusing yet informative take on fitness and aging. Despite being renowned for his physical prowess, Cena is quite vocal about one aspect of his daily routine he doesn’t particularly enjoy: stretching.
Each morning, Cena begins his day by stretching in the shower, humorously admitting that if someone were to walk in on him, they would see him in a rather unusual position, specifically touching his toes. “If you walk in on me taking a shower, you’ll see me in a different POV,” he quipped, adding, “Every morning, full spread.”
While stretching isn’t his favorite part of maintaining his physical condition, Cena knows it’s a necessity. “I hate it,” he stated. “And I do it a lot. All the time.” He emphasized the importance of flexibility, particularly as his lower back often gives him trouble—a common issue for someone his age.

Cena also has a humorous view of the aging body, comparing it to a “crusty rubber band” and cautioning against letting it get too weird. He mentioned to his friend, comedian Amy Poehler, that stretching is essential as one ages. “You got to,” he remarked, acknowledging that while he may not relish the process, the outcomes are valuable.
With an impressive wrestling career that saw him debut in 1999 and culminate in his retirement in 2024, Cena recognizes the toll that such a physically demanding lifestyle has taken on his body. “I’m never performing physically again,” he declared, underscoring his desire to enjoy an extended, active life. “I don’t want to have a bunch of crusty years of punishing my body.”
As a testament to the benefits of flexibility, research indicates a correlation between improved flexibility and longevity. A study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports found that individuals with greater flexibility scores were less likely to die prematurely during the study period. While further research is required to solidify these findings, they align with expert opinions on the health benefits of maintaining flexibility.
Cena’s approach to staying fit includes static stretching as a way to progress gradually. While he admits to finding it tedious, he values the results, commenting, “I want to move around, so I can talk about it or do it. And it sucks, I hate it, and I do it. And it’s great. I like to do it because I like what it yields.”
