USMNT midfielder Sebastian Berhalter transfers to Middlesbrough for $2 million, ending his contract with Vancouver Whitecaps.
U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter is preparing to join Middlesbrough in a transfer deal valued at around $2 million, sources have confirmed. As he was entering the final six months of his contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps, this move allows the Whitecaps to retain a fee rather than lose one of their star midfielders for free.
Berhalter’s transfer to Boro will take place this summer, enabling him to integrate with the Championship club ahead of the upcoming domestic season. The fee of approximately $2 million will secure his services during the summer transfer window.
The Vancouver Whitecaps, coming off a successful period, will benefit from a transfer fee instead of allowing their midfielder to leave at the end of the season without compensation. Having entered the market as a sought-after player due to his contract situation, Berhalter’s recent performances have certainly attracted interest from clubs.
Berhalter showcased his skills in all five of the USMNT’s games this summer, starting with a notable performance against Turkiye where he assisted the opening goal and scored one himself in a close 3-2 loss. The 25-year-old has earned his place in the national setup, making his USMNT debut during Gold Cup and accumulating 18 caps since then.
On the club side, Berhalter’s impressive 2025 season earned him a spot on the MLS Best XI. He played a pivotal role in leading the Whitecaps to both the MLS Cup and the CONCACAF Champions Cup finals while contributing five goals and 13 assists across all competitions. His continued progress in the league was recognized with an All-Star selection this year.
Middlesbrough has been actively scouting and signing talent from MLS, having previously acquired defender Adilson Malanda from Charlotte FC in 2025. They seem committed to strengthening their squad through American talent.
As the preseason is underway, Boro has already played to draws against Farense and Celtic. Their next challenge will be a friendly against Espanyol on August 1.
Following the friendly matches, Middlesbrough will face Wrexham in the first round of the FA Cup on August 7, before kicking off their Championship season with a match against Lincoln City eight days later.
