Ukraine Targets Russian E-Commerce Giant Wildberries

Ukraine intensifies strikes on Wildberries, Russia’s largest e-retailer, as part of efforts to disrupt the country’s economy amid ongoing conflict.

Ukraine has ramped up its military operations against Wildberries, a major Russian online retailer akin to Amazon, amid the ongoing conflict. This new phase signals Kyiv’s strategy to inflict further damage on the Russian economy.

Over the past week, Ukrainian Defense Forces have executed drone strikes on several significant logistics centers in Russia, targeting Wildberries facilities specifically. These attacks occurred between Saturday and Wednesday, striking five of the company’s locations.

The recent drone assaults follow numerous strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries. The aim appears to be to disrupt Moscow’s supply chains and increase the financial strain on its businesses and state budget.

Wildberries is recognized as Russia’s largest online retailer and employs around 48,000 people. “Ukraine has found a new point of pressure to exert against Russia,” emphasized Jimmy Rushton, an independent foreign policy analyst based in Ukraine, in a commentary shared on social media.

Rushton warned that continued attacks on Wildberries could lead to its demise, much like the significance that Amazon holds for logistics in the U.S. and U.K. Tatyana Kim, the owner of Wildberries and recognized as Russia’s wealthiest woman, reported that logistics hubs in two southwestern cities, Krasnodar and Stavropol, sustained damage overnight, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

“There are no words to describe all the feelings and emotions caused by the attacks on ordinary people, our employees, and us, who are simply doing our jobs,” Kim stated via Telegram. Despite the turmoil, Kim expressed a resolve to continue operations for the benefit of the population.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asserted that the targeted hubs were integral in supplying the Russian military with drone parts and other equipment. Serhii Kuzan, chairman of the Kyiv-based Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center think tank, stated that the attacks on Wildberries serve a dual role: crippling Russia’s economy while diminishing its military industrial capacity.

Kuzan highlighted that the destruction of Wildberries’ logistics infrastructure poses a serious setback for the Russian economy and affects its state budget, which finances aggressive military actions against Ukraine. He cited data from Russia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, revealing that Wildberries comprises approximately 3% of Russia’s gross domestic product, equating to losses estimated at around $2.3 billion.

Such substantial damages could surpass the combined annual budgets of 53 Russian regions, potentially triggering a wave of bankruptcies among small to medium enterprises. “Considering the scale of the targeted facilities and their dual role in supporting both civilian life and military efforts, it’s reasonable to anticipate that this tactic will not halt,” Kuzan noted.

He concluded by stating that this method allows Ukraine to inflict significant economic damage on Russia while utilizing comparatively limited resources.
