Arsenal’s William Saliba will be sidelined for an extended period due to a back injury sustained during the World Cup, as confirmed by the club.
Arsenal central defender William Saliba is set for a spell on the sidelines after returning from the World Cup with a back injury. The club has confirmed that Saliba will not undergo surgery but will require a “period of rehabilitation.”
On July 23, 2026, Arsenal officially announced that Saliba will be out for an extended period due to this injury. Saliba was substituted during the 30th minute of France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain, where he played a crucial role in helping France reach that stage of the competition.
“William Saliba has returned to us from World Cup duty,” the statement from Arsenal reads. “Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation.” The club clarified that extensive assessments had ruled out surgery and that Saliba will begin a managed recovery programme.

“William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, along with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period,” the statement continued. Arsenal emphasized their commitment to supporting Saliba to help him achieve full fitness as quickly as possible.
Saliba’s injury comes during a challenging time for Arsenal, as other key players, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard, also faced fitness issues last season. The pressures of playing in the World Cup have led to concerns over player injuries, with Rice and Saka previously managing injury problems while involved in the tournament.
In an interesting scheduling quirk, all players who participated in the World Cup are required to take a mandatory three weeks off following their team’s exit before reporting for pre-season training. For Arsenal, that means Saliba’s absence will have implications heading into their first of four pre-season games, set to take place on August 1 against Girona. The Gunners will continue their preparations with the Community Shield against Manchester City in Cardiff on August 16, before kicking off their Premier League title defense at home against Coventry on August 21.
In more uplifting news for the club, Ben White has returned to pre-season training after overcoming a knee injury sustained previously in May during a crucial match against West Ham. Unfortunately, Jurrien Timber remains sidelined due to a groin injury that also kept him out of the World Cup, although he expressed hope for a swift return to action.
As Arsenal embraces these challenges, Cristhian Mosquera and Riccardo Calafiori are set to step up into centre-back roles if necessary, while Piero Hincapie is expected to rejoin training shortly after Ecuador’s early exit from the tournament. Saliba’s defensive partner, Gabriel Magalhaes, is also anticipated to join the squad soon, ensuring that Arsenal remains prepared for the upcoming season.
