Ukraine Army Chief Likely to be Dismissed Amid Protests

Amid escalating protests, it appears that Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s commander in chief, is on the verge of being dismissed from his position. Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff has hinted at a significant reshuffle within the army’s leadership as public outcry against Syrskyi grows.

For over five days, thousands of people have gathered outside the presidential office in Kyiv, chanting demands for Syrskyi’s removal while calling for the reinstatement of Mykhailo Fedorov, who was dismissed as defense minister after a conflict with Syrskyi. Fedorov, who is recognized for his modernization efforts in Ukraine’s military, served for only six months before his ousting.

In an op-ed published recently, Syrskyi expressed bewilderment over the reported discord with Fedorov, stating, “I perceived our relationship as a working one: with complex issues and differing views. This is how it should be during a major war.” He extended a personal apology to Fedorov for any unintentional offense he may have caused during their time working together.

Despite the denials from Ukraine’s general staff regarding Syrskyi’s imminent dismissal, which claims he and deputy Andriy Hnatov are still actively fulfilling their roles, the pressure on the administration is evident. Kyrylo Budanov, an influential figure in Zelenskyy’s circle, acknowledged the public’s sentiments, stating, “The public’s position has been heard,” and emphasized the need for calm as discussions unfold.

The protests ignited last Thursday when demonstrators showcased creative displays, even using cheese graters as a pun on Syrskyi’s name in Ukrainian. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has confirmed the breakdown of the relationship between Syrskyi and Fedorov and has been seen meeting with potential candidates for defense leadership, including Mykhailo Drapatiy, who is known for his past military exploits.

A senior source in the armed forces indicated that discussions on Syrskyi’s future are ongoing, asserting, “His destiny is decided. The question is who will replace him,” emphasizing the need for a candidate who is both popular and non-political.

Protest organizers have laid down a deadline for Zelenskyy, demanding Fedorov’s reinstatement by Friday, warning of a broader and indefinite protest across the country if the demands are not met.

Zelenskyy has also commended long-range strikes conducted by Ukrainian forces against Russian targets, reinforcing his administration’s stance that escalating military pressure is essential to bringing an end to the ongoing conflict.
