In a surprising twist within the transfer market, Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli are reportedly considering a goalkeeper swap involving Guglielmo Vicario and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. Both clubs are reassessing their options between the posts as the summer transfer window unfolds.
The situation at Napoli’s Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is evolving rapidly, especially following the departure of Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri’s appointment as the club’s new manager. Under the fresh leadership of Allegri, there is an expectation that the goalkeeping hierarchy may undergo significant changes, with Alex Meret potentially reestablishing himself as a key figure in the starting lineup.
This shift has brought into question the future of Milinkovic-Savic, who joined Napoli just a year prior for approximately €22 million. His role now appears uncertain as the club reshapes its strategy between the posts.
Emerging reports suggest a direct swap between the two clubs could be on the table. Napoli has expressed keen interest in Vicario, who has been linked with a departure from Tottenham for a significant period. The feasibility of this swap deal is expected to become clearer in the coming days as discussions continue.
If completed, this swap deal would see Milinkovic-Savic move to London, where he would work with Tottenham’s manager Roberto De Zerbi, while Vicario would travel to Naples to join Allegri’s rebuilding project. This move could simultaneously address two separate goalkeeping dilemmas.
Since his arrival at Tottenham, Vicario has made 117 appearances, keeping 29 clean sheets while conceding a total of 170 goals. He has been crucial to Spurs, playing a vital role in their Europa League success last season, though speculations regarding his long-term future in London have surged.
Tottenham narrowly managed to avoid relegation last season, finishing 17th in the Premier League, which has led to an ambitious rebuild under De Zerbi’s leadership. The club has been proactive in the transfer market, signings including Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, as well as free transfers for Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson.
The rebuilding efforts have extended to midfield, featuring the acquisition of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million, which was followed by a club-record signing of Sandro Tonali for £100 million from Newcastle United. These moves underscore the ambitious change taking place at Tottenham as they aim to challenge the league’s elite.
