Chelsea agrees a record £117 million deal for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, marking a significant move in the transfer window.

Chelsea has finalized a record-breaking deal to bring Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge, with a fee set at £117 million ($157 million). The announcement created quite the buzz when The Athletic revealed the news just hours before Rogers participated in England’s thrilling 6-4 victory over France in the World Cup third-place playoff.

The negotiations unfolded rapidly, with sources indicating that discussions commenced on Thursday, a day after England faced Argentina in the semi-finals. Chelsea’s manager, Xabi Alonso, reached out to Rogers on Friday to discuss his plans, and by the end of the day, the personal terms were agreed upon.

Integral to the deal were Chelsea’s owners and sporting directors, including Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, along with club captain Reece James who spoke with Rogers during the England camp. Close friend Cole Palmer also texted Rogers, emphasizing Chelsea’s serious interest in acquiring him. The urgency and speed of the negotiations left a positive impression on Rogers, who viewed the club’s quick actions favorably.

Rogers, who notched 14 goals and 11 assists for Villa last season, was in high demand, attracting interest from various elite clubs. Arsenal appeared to be the frontrunner for his signature, but Chelsea ultimately won the race.

One of Chelsea’s main objectives this summer was to acquire a versatile attacker, and Rogers was their top pick from the outset. His capability to play across multiple positions, including left, right, and in deeper midfield roles, was highly valued by the coaching staff. Both Alonso and Villa representatives praised Rogers for his humility and potential to become a leader within the squad.

Despite significant interest from Arsenal, who were poised to secure Rogers primarily as a left winger, Chelsea’s approach made a difference. The contrast in how each club expressed their interest resonated with Rogers, prompting him to choose Chelsea.

Aston Villa’s co-owner Nassef Sawiris had the final say on the matter, and while the club valued Rogers highly, they understood the financial implications of selling their prized asset. Villa had anticipated the need to find a replacement, planning to use the funds from Rogers’ transfer to enhance their squad further.

Notably, the negotiations were expedited after England’s World Cup journey ended, allowing Villa to prepare for Rogers’ exit. With the transfer completed, Villa has now shifted focus towards acquiring a fast winger, with potential targets including Crysencio Summerville from West Ham.

Rogers underwent a medical in London shortly after finalizing the deal and is expected to play a pivotal role as Chelsea looks to turn things around this season following their tenth-place finish last year. The acquisition is seen as a strong statement of Chelsea’s ambition as they aim to reclaim their status as one of England’s top teams.
