New data shows Gen Z’s alcohol consumption now aligns with older generations, signaling a shift in drinking habits among younger adults.

Recent research reveals that Generation Z is drinking alcohol at rates comparable to older generations, dispelling the myth that this cohort is largely abstaining from alcohol. While they had been characterized as teetotalers, new data shows a notable increase in alcohol consumption among Gen Z.

A survey conducted by IWSR indicates that 74% of Gen Z adults reported having consumed alcohol in the past six months, a rise from 66% three years ago. This figure closely aligns with the overall adult drinking rate of 76%, which has remained steady during that same timeframe. Gen Z’s enthusiasm for cocktails has led them to consume more grouped drinks compared to other age demographics.

Marten Lodewijks, president and managing director of IWSR, commented, “They’re late to the party, they’re not skipping the party.” Millennials and Generation X still slightly outpace Gen Z in drinking frequency, with 81% and 77% of those groups having reported alcohol use, respectively. Interestingly, baby boomers are moderating their drinking habits, with only 71% consuming alcohol recently.

One significant factor contributing to Gen Z’s delayed indulgence in alcohol was the pandemic, which limited social gatherings and traditional drinking experiences for those who came of age during that period. Lodewijks noted, “They were literally coming of age at a point in which everything got shut down.””>

Financial constraints have also played a role; many young adults are not keen on spending what little disposable income they have on alcohol. Additionally, public health warnings regarding the risks associated with alcohol consumption and heightened awareness driven by social media may make them more cautious about drinking.

As the pandemic recedes, more Gen Z members are reverting to social norms, engaging in typical college and work experiences, and consequently becoming more prone to consume alcohol. This generation is also favoring products that provide a familiar taste, leading to an increase in the popularity of ready-to-drink cocktails.

Clement Pappas, co-founder and CEO of Stateside Brands, mentioned that younger consumers are gravitating toward drinks that combine familiar flavors with alcohol, appealing to their client demographic. He said, “It has alcohol in it, but it’s not a foreign flavor.” Reports suggest that Gen Z’s drinking patterns include a preference for higher-end cocktails rather than the volume of drinks seen with older generations.

While historically cautious, Gen Z’s evolving relationship with alcohol is seen as more responsible compared to their millennial predecessors. Ultimately, the landscape of drinking culture continues to shift, with Gen Z demonstrating a unique approach to consumption even as they embrace alcohol.
