Elon Musk and Tom Holland Clash Over ‘The Odyssey’

Elon Musk is embroiled in a contentious online dispute with Tom Holland regarding the upcoming film adaptation of “The Odyssey” directed by Christopher Nolan.

Over recent months, Musk has openly criticized the film alongside other detractors. In a counter to the negativity, Holland, who hosts the podcast “The Rest is History”, expressed his strong approval of the movie on X, declaring it “the best cinematic adaptation of a Greek myth I have ever seen.”

In response, Musk issued a curt reply that insulted Holland, creating confusion among users about whether he targeted the famous Spider-Man actor or the historian of the same name.

In Nolan’s film, Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon. The swift exchange on social media led to users quickly clarifying that Musk’s comments were directed at the historian, who reacted with poise, reaffirming his view. “Very happy to say it again. The Odyssey is an amazing film,” Holland tweeted. “Missing out on seeing it because you think it’s woke or whatever is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Your loss.”

Previously, Musk had criticized casting choices for the film, notably condemning the selection of Lupita Nyong’o for the role of Helen of Troy. This began Musk’s tirade in January, during which he claimed that Nolan had “lost his integrity” and suggested that the film was tailored to meet the diversity standards set by the Academy Awards, which instituted new criteria for representation in 2024.

Nolan’s direction appears to have already garnered attention with many early reactions leaning positively towards the film. Figures in the industry, such as IndieWire’s Anne Thompson, have touted it as a frontrunner for Best Picture at the upcoming Oscars.

Thompson elaborated, stating her high expectations were met and described Nolan’s adaptation as stunning in IMAX 70 mm. She believes that, along with Matt Damon’s performance, numerous accolades could result in nominations for both the film and its cast.

This ongoing feud and the contrasting opinions surrounding “The Odyssey” underscore a deeper conversation on representation in Hollywood, as Musk continues his public commentary while enthusiasm builds for the movie’s imminent release.
