Perplexity Develops AI Tool ‘Teammate’ to Conquer Coding Market

Perplexity, a San Francisco-based AI search startup, is making waves in the competitive landscape of AI coding tools. The company is reportedly developing an internal tool known as ‘Teammate’, which could soon enter the public domain, marking its stride into the burgeoning AI coding sector.

The tool has been in use by Perplexity’s engineers since May, although specifics regarding its public launch remain unclear. Perplexity, with a valuation of $20 billion from a recent funding round, initially focused on creating an AI-powered search engine aimed at rivaling Google. However, with the introduction of Teammate, Perplexity is positioning itself to challenge established players like Cursor, Anthropic, and OpenAI, who have already developed popular AI coding solutions.

Teammate is designed to manage software projects comprehensively, overseeing them from inception to completion. An internal announcement stated its capabilities, highlighting that it could own projects, troubleshoot issues, and monitor services effectively.

A spokesperson for Perplexity chose not to comment on the project. However, screenshots obtained reveal that engineers at Perplexity have tasked the tool with identifying bugs within internal systems.

This AI tool is model-agnostic, meaning it doesn’t rely on any specific chatbot framework, according to a knowledgeable source. Perplexity’s Chief Technology Officer, Denis Yarats, has actively encouraged the startup’s engineers to leverage AI in their coding endeavors. Just weeks before Teammate was rolled out internally, Yarats expressed his vision in a message, urging software engineers to transition away from manual code inspections and fully embrace AI technology.

“By the end of the year or sooner, I expect engineers to stop looking at code entirely and rely on AI,” he stated. Additionally, he has addressed concerns regarding the quality of AI-generated code, dismissing the term ‘slop’ often associated with subpar results. “Slop is not going to be a thing as long as the code the AI produces meets quality criteria,” Yarats affirmed.

As the tech industry buzzes with anticipation, the potential launch of Teammate could significantly reshape the competitive landscape in AI coding. With powerful players like Perplexity entering the fray, the coding tool market is poised for exciting developments.
