The mayor’s tweet caught the attention of New Yorkers, with many humorously interpreting it as an encouragement for city residents to hit the soccer fields following the U.S. elimination from the tournament, despite the post being made before the game.

Launched on June 12, this program was part of New York City’s World Cup festivities, designed to offer free overnight pickup soccer across all five boroughs until July 18.

Collaborating with New York City FC, NYC Footy, NYC Parks, and the Hudson River Park Trust, the initiative aims to give adults 18 and older the chance to play soccer throughout the night at designated fields throughout the city.

During the program’s announcement, Mamdani emphasized that some of the greatest soccer action happens not just in stadiums but also on local neighborhood fields. He expressed his desire for every New Yorker to participate in the World Cup excitement, whether by playing soccer themselves or cheering others on.

Each selected location boasts multiple small-sided pitches complete with goals, cones, and soccer balls, with NYC Footy staff managing the organization of teams throughout the night. New York City FC furthers the initiative by providing youth clinics, community programming, and giveaways at rotating venues.

Locations set to host these pick-up games include Chelsea Waterside in Manhattan, Astoria Park in Queens, Calvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn, Soundview Park in the Bronx, and Fairview Park on Staten Island. Games typically kick off around 10:30 p.m. and can continue deep into the night, with security personnel present at each site to ensure safety.

In addition to the soccer initiative, Mamdani made headlines this week with another significant announcement regarding the NJ/NY Gotham FC, which will be relocating to Etihad Park in 2028. The new venue will be shared with New York City FC.

Mamdani commented on the relocation, stating, “Their new stadium, Etihad Park, the first dedicated soccer stadium anywhere in the five boroughs, matches Gotham FC’s standard of excellence. For decades to come, the people will now be able to watch Gotham FC show off the world’s game in the world’s borough.”
