France Appeals to FIFA Over Olise’s Yellow Card

The French Football Federation has appealed to FIFA to rescind Michael Olise’s yellow card amid concerns over a potential suspension before the quarter-finals.

The French Football Federation (FFF) has officially appealed to FIFA in hopes of having Michael Olise’s yellow card revoked. The Bayern Munich star received the caution during France’s last-16 victory against Paraguay, which has raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming quarter-finals.

Olise has emerged as a standout player in the 2026 World Cup, but now his participation in the latter stages is under threat due to the disciplinary sanction. The FFF has stressed that its appeal is separate and based on the specifics of Olise’s situation, asserting that the booking warrants cancellation on its own merits, independent of other cases. However, the timing of this request suggests a shift among member associations, indicating a greater willingness to contest on-field decisions following the leniency shown in Balogun’s case.

Furthermore, should Olise face a suspension, it would be particularly detrimental to France’s campaign given his crucial role. Currently, he leads the World Cup assist charts with five, making him the top provider in a single tournament since 1994 and just one assist away from tying the all-time record of six, set by Pele in 1970. Olise has also been named Man of the Match on two occasions during this competition.
