Sandro Tonali Joins Tottenham for Record £100m Deal

Tottenham signs Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for a club-record £100m, marking a significant move in the summer transfer window.

Sandro Tonali has officially joined Tottenham Hotspur from Newcastle United in a club-record deal worth £100 million. The north London club will pay the Magpies £92.5 million upfront, with an additional £7.5 million contingent on performance-related add-ons.

The Italian midfielder, who is set to earn over £275,000 per week, expressed a strong desire to work under Spurs’ manager, Roberto De Zerbi. Tonali had garnered interest from several clubs, including Manchester City, but ultimately chose Tottenham after citing De Zerbi’s influence as a major factor in his decision.

In an interview, Tonali remarked on his move, stating, “When I arrived at the club, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one. I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.”

This transfer marks the second-largest fee ever received by Newcastle for a player, following the £125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer. Additionally, it puts Spurs’ spending for the current window at £237 million, following their recent £85 million acquisition of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.

With Tonali becoming the sixth signing of the summer for Tottenham, De Zerbi still aims to strengthen the forward line, having focused initially on the defense and midfield. De Zerbi has expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Tonali, declaring, “Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our club. I have followed him for a long time, and I’m so happy to be working with him now. There was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer; however, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham.”

Tonali’s departure from Newcastle comes only a year after he joined the club from AC Milan in a £55 million deal. The transfer allows Newcastle to make a £45 million profit, which they plan to reinvest to enhance their squad with promising talent. The Magpies have already initiated this process by signing winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim for £42 million.

On social media, Tonali bid farewell to Newcastle, thanking both the club and fans for their support during his tenure. He reflected, “Today it’s time to say goodbye and it’s hard to find the right words. I want to start by thanking the club and the people who work every day at the training ground. Thank you to the staff and my teammates for believing in me. A special mention to the gaffer, Eddie, who has been a guiding figure throughout this journey.”

Additionally, Spurs have made several other signings to bolster their squad, including defender Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million and free agents Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka. This aggressive approach in the transfer market signals a shift in Tottenham’s strategy, aiming to improve on their recent underwhelming performances in the Premier League.
