Tragedy strikes as five people are shot dead in Stade, Germany, during a custody dispute at a center for mothers and children.

A shooting at a center for mothers and children in Stade, near Hamburg, has resulted in the deaths of six individuals, according to German police. The incident, attributed to a male suspect involved in a custody dispute over his baby daughter, unfolded on Thursday at the youth welfare facility. The victims included four women and two men, all employees of the center.

The shooting was reported around 12:10 PM local time, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Police subsequently confirmed that multiple homicides had occurred, leading them to advise the public to stay away from the area. Some individuals sustained injuries during the assault, although the suspect’s baby and its mother were present but unharmed.

Initial eyewitness accounts recalled a tense atmosphere, with one witness stating that police ordered a couple to stop as they attempted to flee in a vehicle. Reports indicate that officers fired between 10 and 15 shots at the car, which subsequently was stopped on a nearby road due to a blown tire.

Three individuals, including the suspected shooter, were reportedly taken into custody, with officials assuring the community that there was no further danger to the public. Local broadcaster ZDF mentioned that emergency personnel were seen moving quickly through the vicinity.

Officials have reinforced that this tragic event does not appear to relate to a broader issue such as femicide or political motivations; rather, it seems to stem from a troubling domestic situation. A spokesperson for the city indicated that the center serves women and children, and during the shooting, children at a nearby daycare and primary school were also inside the facilities.

This tragedy has shocked the small town of Stade, which has about 50,000 residents and is situated roughly 30 kilometers west of Hamburg. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the shooting while providing support to the affected families and the community at large.
