Marco Palestra’s transfer from Atalanta to Chelsea is set to enhance the squad with his dribbling and versatility on the flanks.

Italy international Marco Palestra is poised to transfer to Chelsea from Atalanta following an impressive loan season at Cagliari. The 21-year-old’s abilities on the field have caught the attention of many, showcasing both his dribbling skills and remarkable athleticism.

Fabio Pisacane, Cagliari’s head coach, recently remarked on Palestra’s abilities, stating, “He seems like a player built on the PlayStation. Ninety-nine per cent acceleration and so on. He is handsome even when he runs. He looks like a panther, like a leopard.” The praise does not stop there; legendary figures like Cesc Fabregas recognize his talent, while coaches such as Arrigo Sacchi and Gennaro Gattuso have advocated for his inclusion in the national squad.

The name Palestra translates to ‘gym’ in Italian, which may have contributed to Chelsea’s interest as they seek to add more athleticism to their flanks under Xabi Alonso. However, Palestra’s fit extends beyond mere physical attributes. His versatility allows him to play on either flank, whether as a full-back or wing-back, and he excels in both crossing and taking on defenders. Remarkably, he recorded the second-most take-ons in Serie A last season, trailing only Juventus star Kenan Yildiz.

Having enjoyed Champions League experience with Atalanta, Palestra’s subsequent loan to Cagliari has proven beneficial. “He pulled the cart, as they say, for seven or eight months, all in one breath,” Pisacane noted. Palestra made an impactful start to the season, turning heads in hostile environments, such as when he played in front of 70,000 fans in Naples. His ability to set up goals was evident, illustrated by a crucial assist against Lecce.

Frequently playing as a right wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation under Pisacane, Palestra has adapted well to various tactical systems. His previous coach, Francesco Modesto, highlighted Palestra’s unique skill set, particularly his dribbling technique. “He has a dribbling ability few have. A right-footed player carrying the ball with his left means you never understand which way he can go. He knows how to cross with both his left and right,” Modesto said.

Palestra’s statistics from Serie A further demonstrate his capability, ranking ninth for successful crosses and third for most corners won, both indicative of his attacking threat. Transitioning to Chelsea’s style may demand adjustments; Cagliari’s system placed them in the bottom half in terms of points and possession last season.

The consensus among his coaches is that Palestra is well-suited for the demands of the Premier League, especially given its physical nature. His own journey has been one of remarkable progress—what was once considered a lack of speed has transformed into notable acceleration, fueled by a growth spurt in his mid-teens. Interest in him has surged across Europe, and Bournemouth’s scouts notably recognized his fit in their high-tempo playing style.

Emerging with commendation from the challenging environment of Italian football, Palestra also played creditably during Italy’s World Cup elimination against Bosnia-Herzegovina, showcasing his potential as a key player for the national team moving forward.

Furthermore, his strong mentality and supportive family life, as noted by those close to him, bode well for his future. “Qualities not only technical and tactical, but a boy who has a good head on his shoulders, has a family that helps him a lot, serious people,” was quoted by Pisacane.

Despite his accomplishments, there’s a belief that Palestra has yet to reach his full potential. “Marco, in my opinion, has not shown all his potential yet. Marco has shown, I don’t want to exaggerate, 60 to 70 per cent,” Pisacane stated confidently. If Coach Alonso can help him tap into the remaining talent, Palestra may well prove to be a standout addition for Chelsea.
